Sciatica physiotherapy near Bhubaneswar

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock and down the leg, often with tingling, numbness or weakness. It happens when a nerve in the lower back is irritated or pressed. Many cases improve within a few weeks. Physiotherapy helps with an assessment, exercises, hands-on treatment and advice on staying active while the nerve settles.

What does sciatica feel like?

  • A sharp, burning or shooting pain down the back of one leg
  • Tingling or pins and needles in the leg or foot
  • Numbness in part of the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain that is worse when sitting, coughing or sneezing

What usually causes it?

  • A slipped (bulging) disc pressing on a nerve in the lower back
  • Narrowing of the space around the nerves (spinal stenosis), more common as we get older
  • Changes in the bones or joints of the lower spine
  • Sometimes, tight or irritated muscles deep in the buttock

How can physiotherapy help sciatica?

Physiotherapy aims to calm the irritated nerve, keep you moving and reduce the chance of it coming back.

  • Exercises chosen for how your symptoms behave, starting gently
  • Hands-on treatment alongside exercise, where it helps
  • Advice on sitting, sleeping, lifting and pacing your day
  • Monitoring: we keep checking the strength and feeling in your legs, and tell you straight away if you need a doctor

Why the warning signs matter

Rarely, the nerves at the bottom of the spine are badly squeezed. This is called cauda equina syndrome. It needs emergency treatment, which is why the warning signs on this page should never be ignored.

What happens at your first visit?

  1. We ask where the pain travels, what makes it better or worse, and your general health
  2. We check how your back moves and test the strength, feeling and reflexes in your legs
  3. We explain what is likely irritating the nerve and whether you need a doctor's review
  4. We agree a plan and start gentle exercises that suit you

What can I do at home?

  • Keep up your normal activities as much as possible
  • Avoid sitting or lying down for long periods; change position often
  • Do the exercises your physiotherapist gives you, little and often
  • A heat pack wrapped in a cloth can ease muscle pain
  • If you need pain relief, ask a doctor or pharmacist what is suitable for you

Stop and ask us, or see a doctor, if your pain gets worse or you notice any of the warning signs above.

Questions about sciatica

How long does sciatica last?

Many people improve within a few weeks, though it can take longer. If your pain isn't improving, is getting worse, or stops you doing normal activities, get it assessed.

Should I stay in bed with sciatica?

No. Long periods of lying or sitting can make it worse. Gentle activity and the right exercises usually help the nerve settle.

Can physiotherapy help a slipped disc?

Yes, it often can. Many disc problems improve over time, and exercise plus advice on activity is a recommended first step in clinical guidelines.

Will I need surgery?

Most people with sciatica don't. Surgery is considered when symptoms are severe or not improving with other treatment, and that decision is made with a doctor.

Is walking good for sciatica?

For many people, short, regular walks help. Your physiotherapist will tell you how much is right for you and how to build up.
