Neck pain physiotherapy near Bhubaneswar
Most neck pain comes from posture, muscle strain or sleeping awkwardly, and it often eases within a few weeks. Physiotherapy helps when it lingers or keeps returning: we assess how your neck and shoulders move, then use exercises, hands-on treatment and practical advice for work, phone use and sleep. We see people at our clinic, at home or online.
What does neck pain feel like?
- Stiffness, especially when turning your head, for example to check traffic
- Aching across the neck and the top of the shoulders
- Pain after long hours at a desk, laptop or phone
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull
- Pain, pins and needles or numbness travelling into an arm (tell us about this at your assessment)
What usually causes it?
- Holding one posture for a long time, such as desk work or looking down at a phone
- Sleeping in an awkward position, or on a pillow that doesn't suit you
- Muscle strain from lifting or carrying
- A pinched nerve, which can cause arm pain or tingling
- An injury such as whiplash from a road accident or a fall
- Age-related changes in the neck joints, often called "cervical spondylosis"
How can physiotherapy help neck pain?
Physiotherapy aims to ease pain, restore comfortable movement and stop the problem coming back.
- Exercises to improve how your neck and upper back move, and to strengthen the muscles that support your head
- Hands-on treatment where it helps, such as gentle mobilisation and soft-tissue techniques
- Practical changes to how you sit, work, use your phone and sleep
- Guidance on arm symptoms: if pain or tingling travels into your arm, we check the nerves and tell you if you need a doctor's review
What about "cervical" problems?
Neck pain is often described as a "cervical problem". Age-related changes in the neck are common and are not always the cause of pain. We look at how your neck is working now and what can improve it.
What happens at your first visit?
- We ask how the pain started, your work and screen habits, how you sleep, and your general health
- We check how your neck, shoulders and upper back move, and test strength and feeling in your arms
- We explain what we think is causing the pain, in plain words
- We agree a plan and show you the first exercises and posture changes to try
What can I do at home?
- Keep your neck moving gently; avoid keeping it completely still
- Don't wear a neck collar unless a doctor has told you to; it is usually better to keep moving
- Try a low, firm pillow
- A heat pack or a cold pack wrapped in a cloth can ease pain
- Take short breaks from screens, and raise your phone or screen nearer eye level
- If you need pain relief, ask a doctor or pharmacist what is suitable for you
Stop and ask us, or see a doctor, if your pain gets worse or you notice any of the warning signs above.
Questions about neck pain
Should I wear a neck collar?
Usually not. For most neck pain it is better to keep your neck moving gently. If a doctor has given you a collar after an injury, follow their advice.
Is "cervical" pain the same as neck pain?
"Cervical" refers to the neck part of the spine, so cervical pain is neck pain. "Cervical spondylosis" means age-related changes in the neck joints, which are very common and don't always cause pain.
Can screen work cause neck pain?
Long periods looking down at a laptop or phone can contribute. We'll look at how you work and suggest exercises and simple changes to your set-up.
Can you treat neck pain online?
Online sessions work well for advice, checking exercises and posture at your desk. If we think you need hands-on treatment or a closer examination, we'll suggest a clinic or home visit.
Why does my neck pain cause headaches?
Tension and stiffness in the upper neck can refer pain into the head. Your physiotherapist will check whether your neck is contributing. A sudden, severe headache needs urgent medical help instead.
