Knee pain physiotherapy near Bhubaneswar

Knee pain often comes from a strain, overuse, or gradual wear in the joint (osteoarthritis). Physiotherapy starts with an assessment of how your knee moves and takes your weight, then uses exercise, hands-on treatment and advice to help improve strength, movement and everyday function. We see people at our clinic near Bhubaneswar, at home, or online.

What does knee pain feel like?

  • Pain when climbing stairs, walking, or getting up from a chair
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting for a while
  • Swelling around the knee
  • Difficulty bending fully, kneeling, squatting or sitting cross-legged on the floor
  • Clicking, catching, or a feeling that the knee might give way

What usually causes it?

  • A sprain or strain after overstretching or twisting the knee
  • Overuse from repeated running, jumping, kneeling or squatting
  • Osteoarthritis, where the joint changes gradually; it is more common as we get older
  • A torn ligament or cartilage (meniscus) after an injury
  • Recovery after knee surgery, such as a knee replacement

How can physiotherapy help knee pain?

Your physiotherapist first works out which structures are likely to be involved and what your knee needs to do in daily life: climbing stairs, walking to the market, or sitting on the floor to eat.

Treatment usually combines:

  • Strengthening exercises for the thigh and hip muscles, which support and protect the knee
  • Movement exercises to help the knee bend and straighten more comfortably
  • Hands-on treatment where it helps, such as gentle joint and soft-tissue techniques
  • Advice on pacing, stairs and floor sitting, so you can stay active without flaring the pain

For knee osteoarthritis, exercise is a core recommended treatment in clinical guidelines. After surgery, we follow a step-by-step plan that fits your surgeon's advice.

Do I need a scan first?

Often not. Many knee problems can be assessed by examining how the knee moves and behaves. If we think you need a doctor's review or a scan, we'll tell you and explain why.

What happens at your first visit?

  1. We ask about your knee, when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and your general health
  2. We watch how you walk, stand, bend and step, and check strength, movement and swelling
  3. We explain what we think is going on, in plain words
  4. We agree a plan with you and show you the first exercises to do at home

What can I do at home?

  • Keep moving gently. Short, regular walks are usually better than long periods of rest
  • An ice pack wrapped in a cloth, for up to 20 minutes, can ease pain and swelling after activity
  • For a few days, ease off the movements that clearly make the pain worse, then bring them back gradually
  • If you need pain relief, ask a doctor or pharmacist what is suitable for you

Stop and ask us, or see a doctor, if your pain gets worse or you notice any of the warning signs above.

Questions about knee pain

Can physiotherapy help knee osteoarthritis?

It can help. Exercise to strengthen the muscles around the knee is a core recommended treatment for osteoarthritis. It doesn't reverse changes in the joint, but it can help with pain, stiffness and everyday activities.

When should physiotherapy start after a knee replacement?

Rehabilitation usually begins soon after surgery and follows your surgeon's instructions. Bring your discharge papers to your first session so we can match the plan to your operation.

Will I be able to sit on the floor again?

It depends on your knee and what is causing the pain. We work towards the movements that matter to you, including sitting on the floor, and we'll be honest about what is realistic.

Can you treat my knee at home?

Yes. We visit homes anywhere in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Cuttack, which suits people who find stairs or travelling difficult.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the cause and how your knee responds. Your physiotherapist will talk this through with you after the first assessment.
