Back pain physiotherapy near Bhubaneswar
Most back pain is not caused by serious damage. It usually comes from strained muscles or joints and often improves within weeks, especially if you stay active. Physiotherapy helps when pain lingers or keeps coming back: we assess how you move, then use exercise, hands-on treatment and advice to help you return to daily life.
What does back pain feel like?
- Aching or stiffness in the lower back
- Pain that is worse after sitting, bending or lifting
- Muscle spasm that makes it hard to move or stand up straight
- Stiffness or aching between the shoulder blades (upper back)
- Pain that spreads into the buttock (if it travels down the leg, read about sciatica)
What usually causes it?
- A strained muscle or ligament after lifting, twisting or a sudden movement
- Sitting for long periods at a desk, while driving, or on a two-wheeler
- A slipped (bulging) disc in the spine
- Age-related changes in the joints of the spine
- Less often, inflammatory conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis
- Rarely, an infection, a fracture or cancer, which is why the warning signs below matter
How can physiotherapy help back pain?
Low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and rehabilitation is one of the most useful things for it. Physiotherapy focuses on getting you moving with more confidence.
- Exercise tailored to you: strength, flexibility and general activity. Clinical guidelines recommend exercise as a first step for low back pain
- Hands-on treatment, used alongside exercise rather than on its own
- Advice on lifting, sitting, sleep and pacing, so daily life keeps going while your back recovers
- A plan to prevent flare-ups, because back pain often comes back if the cause is not addressed
Upper back pain
Stiffness and aching between the shoulder blades is common after long hours at a desk, on a laptop or on a phone. Physiotherapy works on how your upper back moves, the strength of the muscles that hold your posture, and small changes to your work set-up.
What happens at your first visit?
- We ask how the pain started, what eases or worsens it, your work and daily routine, and your general health
- We check how you move, bend and walk, plus the strength and feeling in your legs
- We explain what we think is going on and whether anything needs a doctor's review
- We agree a plan and start you on exercises you can do at home
What can I do at home?
- Stay active and keep up your daily activities as much as you can
- Avoid staying in bed for long periods; it usually slows recovery
- A heat pack or an ice pack wrapped in a cloth can ease pain
- Gentle walking, swimming or yoga can help, as comfort allows
- When sitting for long periods, get up and change position often
- If you need pain relief, ask a doctor or pharmacist what is suitable for you
Stop and ask us, or see a doctor, if your pain gets worse or you notice any of the warning signs above.
Questions about back pain
Should I rest in bed until my back pain goes?
Usually not. Staying active and keeping up daily activities, as far as comfort allows, tends to help back pain settle sooner than bed rest.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI for back pain?
Most back pain does not need a scan. Clinical guidelines advise against routine imaging when there are no warning signs. If we think you need one, we'll explain why and suggest seeing a doctor.
What is a slipped disc?
The discs between the bones of the spine act as cushions. A "slipped" or bulging disc is when part of one presses outwards, sometimes onto a nerve. Many improve over time with activity and the right exercises.
Can physiotherapy help upper back pain from desk work?
Yes. We look at your posture, how you work and how your upper back moves, then give you exercises and practical changes to your desk or phone use.
Is it safe to exercise with back pain?
Usually, yes. The right exercise is one of the most helpful treatments for back pain. Your physiotherapist will show you where to start and how to progress safely.
